This refreshingly liberating tale of a lesbian romance between a repressed theology teacher and a circus acrobat features one of the hottest lesbian love scenes on film. An essential romantic tale.
From the director of I've Heard the Mermaids Singing comes this refreshingly liberating tale of lesbian love. Camille (Pascale Bussières) is a Christian academician romantically involved with Martin (Henry Czerny), a nice enough fellow teacher more interested in advancement than romance.
Camille's repressed emotions and desire for true love come to the surface after she meets flamboyant circus performer Petra (Rachael Crawford). Despite being diametrical opposites, the two are attracted to each other. Initially denying her sexual attraction to the exotic African-Canadian Petra, Camille plays a repetitive game of "I want you, no, I don't" (see: Claire of the Moon).
That is, until Camille finally unleashes her pent-up desires in one of the more sexually charged lesbian love scenes ever filmed. Its much appreciated romanticism and the casting of two attractive women aside, the film suffers from a symbolism-laden, seen-it-before screenplay and a semi-catatonic lead actress (Bussières).
However, the handling of the relationship is both exciting and hopeful, conditions that are much too rare in the typical film that tackles queer love.
